I have never really liked most of the mainstream DC universe, since it seemed a little like the concepts were always (when I was growing up) written with the literary equivalent of a palette knife.
The stuff that does strike me from time to time are the Elseworlds comics, where they take the familiar and twist it and beat it and make it very different. Though it could be argued that since I dig What If– as well I could just like taking and twisting a story and making it unrecognisable.
That said, Brass Goggles, a Steampunk Blog found a beautiful set of DC figures based on the Gotham by Gaslight Elseworlds story.
They are truly awesome. If you visit the creator’s site, he also has re created some of the other things like Star Wars and Dune.
